It was such an honor to join the Make It Mindful podcast with host Seth Fleischauer.
Here is what Seth had to say about our conversation:
“Executive Functioning skills aren’t just for struggling students. They’re the foundation for every student’s success—and historically, we’ve left them up to chance.” - Mitch Weathers
Too often, we view executive functioning skills like organization, time management, and goal setting, as an intervention for struggling learners or those in special education.
But what if we made them a universal part of education?
In the latest episode of Make It Mindful, I spoke with Mitch Weathers, author of Executive Functions for Every Classroom, who challenged this narrow view. He believes these skills belong in Tier 1 interventions - available to all students, embedded in the daily routines of every classroom.
“Young people thrive in predictable environments. When we establish clear routines and model these skills every day, students don’t just learn—they transform. It’s not about adding more to the day; it’s about embedding these skills into what we already do.”
Mitch’s approach emphasizes that teaching executive functioning is less about direct instruction and more about modeling and daily practice. By integrating skills like planning, organization, and accountability into routines, we create a classroom environment where every student develops habits that extend far beyond school walls.
“Accountability isn’t about punishment—it’s about empowerment. It’s something we model for students, so they learn to hold themselves accountable.”
Join the conversation in this week’s episode, where Mitch shares practical strategies, his insights on routines, and the power of predictability in the classroom.
Let’s reimagine what it means to prepare students for success. It starts with empowering every learner with the tools they need to thrive.
